Es el conjunto de actividades que integra el reconocimiento del terreno, la investigación del subsuelo, así como el análisis y las recomendaciones de ingeniería. Se lleva a cabo con el fin de garantizar que el suelo sea adecuado para el diseño y la construcción de las obras, para proteger sobre todo la integridad de las personas.

Otro de los objetivos es mantener la construcción de la forma más adecuada posible, antes de la ocurrencia de cualquier fenómeno externo. De esta forma, se garantiza el buen estado de las vías, instalaciones de servicios públicos, inmuebles y construcciones aledañas.

¿Cómo se realiza la investigación del subsuelo?

– Se basa en el estudio y conocimiento del origen geológico, exploración del subsuelo (pozos, zanjas, perforaciones y sondeos y otros), ensayos y pruebas de campo.

– Los resultados se procesan en el laboratorio, obteniéndose los resultados que permitirán la identificación y clasificación de los diferentes suelos y rocas.

– De esta forma, se cuantifican las características físico-mecánicas e hidráulicas del subsuelo.

El objetivo principal de la evaluación de todas estas características sobre el terreno es elaborar un informe con análisis y recomendaciones. Pero, ¿qué contiene este informe?

– Expresa la interpretación técnica correspondiente a la caracterización del subsuelo y la evaluación de los posibles mecanismos de fallo y deformación.

– Proporciona los parámetros y recomendaciones necesarios para el diseño y la construcción de los sistemas de cimentación y contención.

– Indica diversos factores geotécnicos que pueden influir en el terreno, preparado para las obras.

Las etapas básicas para la elaboración de un estudio geotécnico son:

1. Visita y observación preliminar de la zona de estudio.
2. Recogida de datos relevantes sobre el terreno por especialistas.
3. Programación del proceso geotécnico, localización, materiales y sondeos.
4. Realización de estudios de campo con supervisión técnica.
5. Recogida de muestras de sustrato de suelo para ensayos de laboratorio.
6. Resumen de la información con datos, conclusiones y recomendaciones del estudio realizado.
7. Verificación de la información del informe, mediante la evaluación del suelo de cimentación en fase de excavación.
